WHY IS IT A BAD IDEA?

First, layering shingles adds weight. Most residential roof framing is built for a single layer, so adding another stresses rafters and decking. Furthermore, more layers often trap heat and moisture. This can warp decking, lead to rot, and invite mold.

Moreover, Tennessee and IRC codes demand solid decking before installing asphalt shingles on a roof. IRC R905.2.1 in Tennessee’s 2018 IRC mandate that “asphalt shingles shall be fastened to solidly sheathed decks”. Rutherford County’s code limits covering to two layers maximum—if a second layer already exists, all shingles must be torn off before reroofing.

Also, IRC chapter 15 requires removal of existing coverings down to the deck for a complete replacement, unless specific exceptions apply. Shelby County enforces decking repair or overlay if gaps exceed 1/4″—meaning you must start with a clean, solid deck. Middle Tennessee municipalities like Hendersonville use the 2018 IRC with amendments requiring ice barriers and drip edge, but only when reroofing begins with a clean deck.

WHY SHOULDN’T YOU INSTALL METAL OVER SHINGLES?

Installing metal roofing over shingles comes with its own problems. First, the uneven surface prevents solid fastening and may void manufacturer warranties. Second, trapped moisture accelerates corrosion in the metal and rot in the deck. Also, layering reduces ventilation, further speeding deterioration.

Code-wise, ice and water barriers (R905.2.7.1) and valley liners (R905.2.8.2) must be installed directly on the deck—not over old shingles. These are critical for protecting against ice damming and ensuring reliable water flow.

Additionally, installing drip edge (R905.2.8.5) over existing shingles is a code violation. Proper drip edge must extend below decking and be covered correctly.

WHAT CAN HAPPEN?

From a performance standpoint, every extra layer shortens shingle lifespan. With multiple layers, shingles can’t expand and contract properly and granules wear off faster. Quality shingles performed on solid decking last far longer than overlays.

For metal, corrosion accelerates from moisture, while warped nails and fasteners in old shingles can compromise metal panels. In contrast, a clean deck allows secure attachment and full warranty support.

Why always start with a clean deck?

  1. Meet codes and ensure permits close correctly.
  2. Ensure warranties are valid and long-term.
  3. Prevent water intrusion, rot, and mold.
  4. Provide a flat base for even installation.
  5. Avoid unnecessary repairs—long‑term savings.

Recommended approach:

  • Tear off all existing layers—no shortcuts.
  • Inspect and repair or replace decking.
  • Install ice/water barrier per code.
  • Add proper underlayment, drip edge, valley liners.
  • Install new shingles or metal roofing directly on the deck.

In summary, layering shingles or installing metal over shingles damages roofing integrity, violates Middle Tennessee building codes, and shortens roof life. Waste no time—tear off all old materials and start fresh on a clean deck.
